Malaysia Autoshow 2025 is happening this week and there’s something new to look forward to at the Proton booth. Following the release of the Proton e.MAS 7, the national carmaker is expected to unveil its next EV model to the public for the first time.

As confirmed by Proton, they will be launching a new e.MAS EV model this year. The supposedly smaller and affordable EV will come with the battery included and there’s no additional leasing required.

While the new EV will be put on public display, do expect it to be wrapped or camouflaged like its earlier preview of the e.MAS 7 last year. The showcase will also provide confirmation on which Geely model will be used for the upcoming Proton e.MAS EV.

So far, the indications for the next Proton EV are pointing towards Geely’s Geome Xingyuan as pictured above. This is a fully electric 5-seater hatchback which has been a top-seller in China.

The Xingyuan comes in two motor and battery configurations, with the base model having a 58kW (78hp) motor and a 30.12kWh LFP battery with a CLTC-rated range of 310km. Meanwhile, the higher-spec model has a 85kW (114hp) motor and a 40.16kWh LFP battery that has a CLTC-rated range of 410km on a single charge.

This smaller EV has a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup and unlike the e.MAS 7, it even comes with a 70L frunk. The interior also offers ample of storage which includes a 10L passenger drawer, 5.2L armrest box and even a rear under-seat storage box.

The Xingyuan has a 375L boot capacity which can be expanded up to 1320L with the rear seats folded. Despite being an affordable and compact EV, it also offers a comprehensive suite of safety features which include up to 6 airbags, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian recognition, lane departure warning, intelligent front vehicle departure alert and intelligent auto high beam.

In China, the base model is priced at CNY 68,800 (about RM39,739) while the range-topping high-spec model with the bigger battery is priced at CNY 97,800 (about RM56,489).

Proton hasn’t revealed the name of its second EV model which could be the e.MAS 5 or the e.MAS 3. It is expected to be priced under RM100,000 and assembled locally at Proton’s EV production plant which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025.

The Malaysia Autoshow 2025 event is happening from 9th to 15th May 2025 (Friday to Thursday) at MAEPS Serdang. Tickets cost RM20 per day for weekdays and RM25 per day for weekends. Proton’s booth is located at Hall A at MAEPS.
