The current rate of inflation for households is 6.1%, according to the most recent Consumer Price Index, which monitors the average price changes of a fixed basket of items over time.
Indeed, the rising cost of living is a challenge, particularly for households with lower incomes. And as helpless consumers, it appears that our only options are to hunt for better-paying employment or turn to the government for assistance.
The good news is that inflation is temporary. Prices for food and energy will stabilise, and wage growth will accelerate to keep up with inflation.
The best thing we can do in the interim is to become informed consumers. Thankfully, there is an app to help us battle inflation in a time when there is one for everything.
What does an app that calls itself our pricing buddy actually do? Price Kaki is a cute little app with a tonne of helpful features.
Price Kaki is the first mobile app in Singapore created by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) that allows us to compare the costs of groceries, household goods, and hawker cuisine.
It now has pricing data on 37,000 prepared food items offered in food courts, coffee shops, and hawker centres in addition to over 10,000 products supplied by five large supermarkets.
Additionally, consumers can check over 1,200 supermarket items' unit prices and get notifications on price changes.
Will the pricing on Price Kaki, however, be up to date? Nobody wants outdated listings, after all, especially when there is a discount involved.
Perhaps as a result, Price Kaki encourages customers who share and provide updates by giving them gift cards for groceries, movies, or transportation.
Woman Singapore supermarket: save time and money
Using Price Kaki makes saving money simple. Online comparison shopping will help you find the best deals at the grocery. Singapore Food Agency provided the photo for use.
Price Kaki has been operating since 2019, but it has never seemed more relevant than it does right now, when inflation is soaring and every penny counts.
We can now use the app to filter and sort listings by price and distance and compare the costs across multiple supermarkets rather than manually scouring supermarkets for the best deal.
This will not only save us money, but also time when we plan our shopping excursion or lunch outing.
Unfortunately, due to supply chain restrictions and the conflict in Ukraine, the inflationary pressure will continue to have a disastrous impact on our finances in the immediate future.
We consumers are powerless to stop the global events that are driving inflation. With Price Kaki, we can improve our shopping skills, though.
We won't overpay if we have access to information that is as close to perfect as feasible (i.e., knowledge of all market pricing), especially since that dishonest businesses are exploiting the recent GST rise as a reason to raise prices unfairly.
